Yann Lechelle (born in 1971 (1971)) is a French tech executive and entrepreneur involved in the development of high profile French tech companies such as Appsfire, Snips and Scaleway after having worked in France at Effix, in the UK for Cambridge Animation Systems, in Hollywood at Dreamworks Animation or on Wall Street in the financial software industry.[1]

Education[edit]

He holds a Bachelor of Computer Science Summa Cum Laude from the American University of Paris (1993) and a Master of Business Administration from INSEAD (2001).

Career[edit]

Entrepreneurship[edit]

He is a repeat entrepreneur having founded, co-founded or joined a number of startups, including Etheryl.[2] in 2001, a B2B social network software-as-a-service available to universities[3], Appsfire, an app store recommendation engine sold to MNG in 2015[4], or Snips[5], a privacy-by-design voice assistant deep tech company sold to Sonos[6]. He gives back to the community as a startup mentor, angel investor or contributor to the INSEAD Knowledge portal or via case studies[7].

Executive Roles[edit]

In February 2020, two weeks before global COVID lockdown, he joined Scaleway as CEO[8] until January 2023[9]. During his 3 year mandate, he grew the company threefold to nearly 600 employees while pushing Scaleway to be a leading regional hyperscaler competing with the likes of AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform and OVHcloud. During his mandate, he was a fervent promoter of European Technological sovereignty[10], pointing out weaknesses in the GAIA-X[11][12] project and associated governance, or in the "Cloud de Confiance" construct promoted by the French government in May 2021[13]. As he changed the tagline of the company to "the cloud of choice", he also advocated for a multicloud approach to maximize resilience across operators and minimize dependencies, both to the benefit of the client and to improve strategic autonomy from a national perspective.
