Yasir Al Yasiri (Arabic: ياسر الياسري‎; born May 25, 1985) is an Iraqi Director, Writer & Producer.

Biography[edit]

Early life[edit]

Al Yasiri spent his earlier years living in Baghdad. He first studied civil engineering in (Al Kufa University) but was forced to drop out and leave the country as the Iraq War was ahead, so he traveled with his family to UAE, and from there he started his first step into the film industry by working as an intern in Baghdad production house in Dubai.

In 2003 Yasir began his career as a director, followed by many years that included awards & recognitions from both the Arab world and the international film scene.[1]

As a director[edit]

In 2009 and after six years of directing music videos, Al Yasiri's name became more familiar within the Arab media after directing one of the most significant productions for a music video in the middle east, titled (Tefarigna Alsinin) featuring Mohammed Abdu and Assala Nasri. Yasir's career in music videos continued with another hits for famous Arab singers, making Yasir one of the pioneers in the music video industry.[2]

In 2010, Yasir filmed his first TV Series, 31 episodes Titled (Ma Asaab Alkalam) starring Yasser Al-Masri & (Shahad Al Yaseen) which aired on many Arabic TV stations such as MBC & Abu Dhabi TV.

His debut in movies was in 2012. By directing the award-winning short (Murk light), the short was selected and awarded by more than 30 film festivals worldwide.[3] After that, Yasir was committed to producing more than other 12 short films and produced many TV shows like (Ala Gad Alhal), (Akhir Almataf), (Asmaa Allahu Alhusna) and more.[4]

In 2018, he directed the feature film On Borrowed Time starring Saad Al Faraj & (Salloum Haddad) a story about Four grumpy old men in a Dubai retirement home get a new lease on life when one of them receives a windfall inheritance.

On Borrowed Time Premiered at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in California, USA[5] Following its premiere the film got the attention of the US media [6] The film after that premiered in many other film festivals in the united states winning two awards as best film and getting high reviews as one of the best international films coming from the Arab world.[7]

In 2019, Yasir's new feature film, the Egyptian horror/thriller film 122 (film) was released. Starring (Tarek Lotfi) & (Amina Khalil) & Ahmed El-Fishawy The film was the first-ever Egyptian film to use the 4DX technology[8] The film was a box office hit and was the first Arabic film to be dubbed to Urdu language and was released in theatres in Pakistan [9]

Yasir was one of the jury members of the International Emmy Award in 2019, in the semi-final round[10]
