Yehuda Ullmann (born June 25, 1954) is a clinical professor of plastic surgery. He researches at the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology[1] and a member of the Technion's Senate.[2] He is also the head of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department, which also includes the Burn Unit, in the Rambam Health Care Campus, Haifa.[3][4]
Academic career[edit]
Ullmann graduated in 1981 from the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine at the Technion in Haifa.[5]
Beginning in 2008, he served on the Technion's Faculty of Medicine as a clinical associate professor, and since 2019 he has served as a full clinical professor.[4][6]
Reserch[edit]
Ullmann holds the appointment of a clinical professor of plastic surgery at the Technion's Rappaport Faculty of Medicine.[4]
His main areas of research are fat transplants,[7] wound healing (especially burn wounds),[8] laser and Intense Pulsed Light treatments.[9][10][11]
Ullmann's research activities cover these areas:[12][13]
- He has developed a new model to estimate the take of human aspirated fat grafts, injected subcutaneously into a Nude Mouse. This model enabled to investigate many methods to enhance the fat take.[7]
- He also was involved in developing new methods and materials for accelerating wound healing in general, and burns in particular.[14]
- In collaboration with prof. Amos Gilhar he has investigated autoimmune skin diseases;[15][16][17]
- His academic work was also extended into the field of aesthetic procedures, as forehead rejuvenation, new method for mastopexy, and using CO2 laser and Intense Pulse Light( IPL) for aesthetic purposes, as well as a minimally-invasive approach to ear surgery.[3]
Ullmann edited together with two fellow physicians a book on light flash treatments: Aesthetic Applications of Intense Pulsed Light.[18] He has also co-authored several chapters dealing with the treatment of patients with complex limb injuries.[19]
Medical career[edit]
From 1984 to 1989, Ullmann served as an intern in the Department of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery at the Rambam Health Care Campus.[20]
In 1989, he trained as a fellow in the Department of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk. Then he returned to Israel and served between 1990 and 1995 as senior plastic surgeon in the plastic surgery department at Rambam health care campus. Between 1995 and 1999 he served as deputy director of the department.[21]
Beginning in 1999, and for about eight years, he served as the founder and first head of the Rambam Burn Unit.[22][23]
Ullmann has served since 2007 until today (2020) as head of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department and the Burn Unit, in the Rambam health care campus, Haifa.[24]
In 2000 he established the "Aesthetic Plastic Surgery" service at the Department of Plastic Surgery at Rambam health care campus.[25][26]
Public professional activities[edit]
From 2009 to 2011, Ullmann was chairman of The Israeli Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery,[27] and from 2000 to 2015 he served as a member of the Board of Examiners in the profession, including seven years as Chairman of the Board of Examiners.[1]
As of 2020[update], he serves as chair of the Rambam Physicians Union and the Deputy Chair of the State Physicians Organization.[1][28]
Ulmann is a member of the Israel Medical Association board.[29][30] He is also a member of several editorial boards, such as Annals of Plastic Surgery, Journal of Dermatological Research and Israel Medical Association Journal (IMAJ).[31]
