Mixed martial arts career[edit]
Early career and TKO[edit]
Lainesse began competing in mixed martial arts in 2016. After a brief amateur career he turned professional, making his pro debut in TKO Major League MMA, which at the time was Canada's largest MMA promotion. While competing there he compiled an undefeated record of 3–0, finishing two of his three opponents. TKO Major League's inactivity in 2019 caused Lainesse to sign with Cage Fury Fighting Championships in 2020.[3]
Cage Fury Fighting Championships[edit]
Lainesse was set to make his Cage Fury debut against Connor Dixon on March 9, 2020, at Cage Fury Fighting Championships 82. However the event would be re-booked due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Lainesse debuted against Dixon at the rescheduled CFFC 82 on August 12, 2020. He would win the fight via KO due to punches at 4:30 of round 1.[4]
Lainesse next faced Lirim Rufati at Cage Fury Fighting Championships 86 on October 29, 2020. Lainesse won the fight at just 14 seconds of round 1 via flying knee. This earned him Knockout of the Night and later Knockout of the Year for 2020.[5]
Yohan Lainesse returned to action to face Troy Green at Cage Fury Fighting Championships 93 on March 12, 2021. He went on to win the fight via unanimous decision.[6]
Lainesse received an offer to face CFFC Welterweight Champion, Evan Cutts at Cage Fury Fighting Championships 98 on July 3, 2021. Lainesse went onto to win the fight via TKO due to punches to the body at 2:17 of round 2. This also won him the CFFC Welterweight title and an invitation to compete on Dana White's Contender Series.[7]
Contender Series[edit]
Lainesse (7-0) was next set to face undefeated British prospect, Justin Burlinson (6-0). This bout took place on November 2, 2021, and was the 10th episode of the season 5. Yohan Lainesse went on to win the fight at 1:37 of round 1 via KO due to a left hook that was landed upon returning to the feet after a scramble.[8]
Ultimate Fighting Championship[edit]
Lainesse made is UFC debut against Gabe Green at UFC on ESPN: Font vs. Vera on April 30, 2022. He would lose the fight via TKO in round 2.[9]
Next Lainesse was scheduled to fight Miguel Baeza at UFC 279 on September 10, 2022. However Baeza was forced to withdraw from the contest due to injury, he would later be replaced by Darian Weeks. Lainesse would win the fight via unanimous decision.[10]
Yohan Lainesse was next matched up to face fellow Canadian, Mike Malott at UFC Fight Night: Muniz vs. Allen on February 25, 2023. He would lose the fight via submission due to an arm-triangle choke at 4:15 of round 1.[11]
