Yohei Kiguchi (城口 洋平 Kiguchi Yohei) (born August 5, 1987)[1] is a Japanese entrepreneur and business executive.[2][3][4][5] He is the founder of Enechange and SMAP ENERGY.[6] He is also the managing partner of Japan Energy Fund.[7][8][4][5][2][9][3]
Kiguchi has also served as a commissioner for various organizations, including the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Japan Association of Corporate Executives, and the Japan Association of New Economy.[7][10]
In 2017, he became the first Japanese to be included in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe list.[11][12][7][3]
Early life and education
Yohei Kiguchi was born on August 5, 1987, in Kobe, Hyogo.[7] He attended Nada High School[13] and later enrolled at the University of Tokyo in 2006,[3] where he completed his studies and obtained a degree in Law.[14] He further pursued his education at the University of Cambridge, enrolling in the master's and doctoral program in energy engineering.[14][15][3]
Career
Kiguchi established an exchange program called "HCAP" between the University of Tokyo and Harvard University called "HCAP" (Harvard College in Asia Program).[14][16]
In 2009, he also co-founded the venture company Milog Inc. in collaboration with the University of Tokyo and the Tokyo Institute of Technology.[11] However, the company faced issues and was dissolved in 2012.[12][8][17][14][18]
Following the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Plant accident in 2011, Kiguchi developed an interest in the energy sector.[7] In 2013, he conducted research in energy studies at the University of Cambridge and founded the "Cambridge Energy Data Lab," an industry-university collaborative research institute.[19][20]
In 2015, Kiguchi founded Enechange Ltd., focusing on energy tech, and later established SMAP ENERGY Ltd. in the UK.[21][12][3][21] The two companies merged in 2017, with Kiguchi becoming the CEO.[12]
Enechange Ltd. became the first energy tech company to be listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Mothers market in December 2020[22][23] and achieved unicorn status in November 2021.[24][6]
In 2017, Kiguchi completed his doctoral research and made scholarly contributions by publishing two research papers in the academic journal "Energy".[25][26]
He received his Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of Cambridge in December 2021.[15]
Affiliations
