Muhammad Haqeem Nuriman Nor Azrin (born 20 May 1998)[1] or better known by his stage name as Yonnyboii is a Malaysian singer-songwriter, composer, rapper and record producer. He started his musical career as a teenager by releasing his first mixtape in 2016. He later uploaded the video on YouTube and gained success. In June 2019, Yonnyboii released his debut single "Takut" featuring Caprice.[2] He is currently known in Malaysia as a fast-rising star with a fresh approach to music that has many artists clamoring to work with him.[3]

Personal life

Born Muhammad Haqeem Nuriman Nor Azrin, Yonnyboii is the moniker he used when he played League of Legends. He studied animation, worked in an office as a graphic artist and as a part-timer at a convenience store, but eventually pursued his passion for music. He has been writing songs since he was 13 years old.[3] From an interview with mStar Online on 4 April 2020, Yonnyboii revealed he did not have many friends while always being alone and easily angered.[4] He was the victim of bullying during childhood at an age as early as six years old just because he was acting weird and different from other people due to ADHD, had a scar on his head due to an accident at age 12 years old for which all those factors have triggered him to suffer from depression.[5]

Career

His collaboration with Zynakal in 2019, "Sakit" reached 34 million views on YouTube.[6] "Sakit" was listed as No. 1 on RIM Charts ‘The Most Streaming Single in Malaysia’ for a total of 14 weeks, which launched Yonnyboii's career into mainstream media.[7] As a record producer, Yonnyboii collaborated with Siti Sarah through her new single titled "Dap Dap Dap".[8] On 3 April 2020, Yonnyboii released a new single "Salahku", which reached 300k views on YouTube within one week after its release. Yonnyboii also featured in other songs including the latest song by Dayang Nurfaizah and Faizal Tahir "X Missing You" together with Tuju K-Clique.[9] In April 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Universal Music Malaysia released a song "#jangankeluar" which is a collaboration between 17 Malaysian local artists to support the government's Movement Control Order.[10] The song was written and composed by Yonnyboii himself.[11] In July 2020, Yonnyboii collaborated with Azlan & The Typewriter and released a single titled "Kelabu" while promoting an 'anti-bullying' campaign at the same time with 30 influencers.[12]

Controversy

The second collaboration between Yonnyboii and Zynakal is the song titled "Cemburu" and they have been accused of plagiarism because of using another artist's art as their single cover, which was later removed as per the original artist's request.[13]
