RIM Charts
RIM Charts is a set of charts compiled by Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM) which rank the most-streamed singles in Malaysia. The charts are based on reports submitted by major digital music providers such as Apple Music, Spotify, KKBox and Deezer, and aggregated by BMAT, a company which provides music monitoring services.[1]
History[edit]
RIM has begun publishing charts since mid-1996, at the time where singles market were almost non-existent in Malaysia. The chart is, therefore, more focused on charting albums based on weekly sales. On October 1996, RIM started incorporating electronic point-of-sale (EPOS) into its chart, compiling data from more than 50 retail stores such as Salem Power Station, Music Valley and CD Rama.[2] However, the charts were discontinued in 2006 owing to dwindling album sales in relation to public disinterest to buy album as a whole and difficulties to tabulate the charts due to insufficient information from the retailers on the physical sales.[3]
In 2016, digital music consumption in Malaysia accounted for RM 72.7 mil revenue (39.2%) to the Malaysian music industry in 2016, of which RM31.1mil is contributed from audio streaming alone. From this statistics, RIM stated that the digital music chart "has now clearly grown to the point where an official chart is needed".[3] The first number-one song on this revived chart (week ending February 9, 2017) was "Shape of You" by Ed Sheeran[4], while the first number-one local song (during the same week period) was Wanita Terakhir by Fattah Amin.[5]
Compilation[edit]
Currently, the main RIM Chart lists the Top 20 most streamed songs in Malaysia, with a separate chart for the Top 10 most streamed domestic songs.[3] Only streams that are played for more than 30 seconds are included in the chart, and while both paid tier (premium) and free tier (ad-supported) streams are included, the numbers are not cumulative, meaning the charts will only monitor what the most streamed songs are for that given week. Airplay or internet simulcasting is excluded from the charts, however, playlists created by third parties are included in the charts. In addition, plays from radio features of certain on-demand streaming services (e.g. Spotify’s radio feature) will not be counted for chart purposes.[1]
