Young In Hong
Young In Hong (born 1972)[1] is a visual artist from Seoul, Korea, based in Bristol, England. Hong graduated with a PhD in Fine art from Goldsmith College in 2012,[2] before which she did an MA in the same subject at the same institution. From 1992-1998, she studied at Seoul National University (BA and MA, Sculpture). She currently teaches at Bath School of Design[3] as Senior Lecturer in Mixed Media Textiles.
Practice[edit]
Hong's artistic practice embraces a range of disciplines – textiles, drawing, installation, performance, art in public space and artist book making. She conducts research-led work and is interested in undervalued cultural practices, politics of intuition and the practice of ‘equality’. For her performance projects, she collaborates with dancers, musicians and choreographers and the public. Collective memory embedded in an unwritten history is a central theme, which often leads the artist to focus on historical archival images of specific events in South Korea. In 2015, she was invited to create a new commission for fig-2 at the ICA London. This resulted in her ambitious, very complex, but at the same time very strong and resonating piece In Her Dream[4], a collaboration with Delfina Foundation and The Korean Cultural Centre. Hong combines baroque aesthetics with Korean Shaman music for a performance based on a detailed study of induced violence and isolation in the everyday lives of women from various countries of affiliation.[5]
Hong currently works from her studio[6] at Spike Island in Bristol. In 2020 she participated in exhibitions at Newlyn Art Gallery[7][8] and at The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg[9]. She is represented by PKM Gallery in Seoul.[10]
