Cairotronica is a biannual International Festival of Electronic and New Media arts in Cairo, Egypt. The festival includes a program of artistic and academic activities. Creative Practices[edit]

Khotout West El Balad

The Seven Days, the Heavens and the Earth (2015)[edit]

As part of the 56th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition, Nawar was invited to participate in the group exhibition In the Eye of the Thunderstorm: Effervescent Practices from the Arab World and South Asia.[14] Nawar contributed to the exhibition with an interactive installation titled The Seven Days, the Heavens and the Earth. Nawar created a book, including texts and images to create a visual timeline of the creation myth. In addition to the book and through an amateur sculptor, Nawar explored further the concept of creation. Nawar filmed the hands of the sculptor while struggling to articulate these ideas and produced sketches that were then used to create short animations. The installation consisted in the film being played while overlaying the pages of the book to be seen simultaneously, and the sculptures were displayed in a glass box that was below the book. [15]

Khotout West El Balad (2016)[edit]

Khotout West El Balad is a renovation project in Downtown Cairo. This project showcases Cairo's Downtown (Arabic: وسط البلد) rich heritage and exceptionally celebrates Arabic calligraphy. Calligraphy is a substantial essential art that that is part of the visual environment and public spaces. This includes the letter forms of West El Balad: they tell the story of Cairo through the facades of this great neighborhood.[16] The design team consisted of five young designers (Yasser Nazmy, Ahmad Hammoud, Yosra Gamal, Mirna Noaman, Nada Hesham), mostly students, led by Haytham Nawar and Ghalia Elsrakbi. Through the creation of six different new fonts on an open source platform, the project helps preserve Arabic calligraphy by being inspired from old writings found on building facades and shops signage in the Downtown area. [17] [18]
