Triumph of Neptune and Amphitrite

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The painting "Triumph of Neptune and Amphitrite" or "Birth of Venus" by Nicolas Poussin is displayed in Philadelphia in the Philadelphia Museum of Art[1]. It is oil on canvas (114,4 x 146,6 cm) and shows a group of people on a beach with angels flying over their heads.

Meaning[edit]

The meaning is not clear. It is discussed wether the painting depicts the Venus alongside Poseidon or Amphirtrite and Neptune. Both are possible.

Venus and Poseidon:[edit]

This version is usually the most obvious to art historians. Poseidon is pictured with three horses and a trident. His typical appearance with beard and muscles is known. In addition to this, the depiction of the Birth of Venus is very similar to the painting "Birth of Venus" by Sandro Botticelli. It is said that the painting shows the arrival of the Venus after her birth in sea. There are small details, like the chariot in the clouds on the left side, that represent typical features of the Venus[2]. This is why it would make perfect sense if this painting portrayed the Venus.

Neptune and Amphitrite:[edit]

The story of Neptune and Amphitrite is not as obvious to the painting as the previous one. But it is said to show the loving couple as a they are both Gods of the Sea.
