Young Midi (real name Eugene Bothma) is a South African rapper, singer, and songwriter known for performing in Afrikaans. He is considered one of the first artists to pioneer and popularize the Afrikaans trap genre. Young Midi is known for singles such as Dankbaar (featuring Phantom Steeze), Babbelas, Hoekom Slaap Jy (Freestyle), and Wie. He has collaborated with South African artists including Phantom Steeze and Buzzi Lee.
Early life
Eugene Bothma was born in Kempton Park, Gauteng, South Africa.[1] He adopted the stage name Young Midi as he entered the South African underground music scene and began producing and rapping in Afrikaans.
Career
Young Midi began releasing music independently in 2022. His breakout single, Dankbaar (featuring Phantom Steeze), was released on 13 May 2022.[2] The track combined Afrikaans lyrics with trap production and introduced his unique style to a wider audience.
In 2023, he released several solo tracks including Wie (24 February 2023)[3] and Vandag (6 October 2023).[4]
He also began collaborating with other South African musicians. On 9 June 2023, he featured on Tot Die More with Loobub DJ.[5] On 11 August 2023, he released Awe featuring Buzzi Lee.[6]
In June 2024, Young Midi released the single Babbelas.[7] In November of the same year, he reunited with Phantom Steeze on the track Kyk.[8]
On 28 February 2025, he released Hoekom Slaap Jy (Freestyle), showcasing a minimalist one-minute Afrikaans freestyle.[9]
Young Midi has been recognized in radio and interviews as a pioneer of Afrikaans trap music. In a 2024 interview with VOW FM 88.1, he was introduced as "the first Afrikaans trap artist in South Africa."[10]
