As a child, Schäfer began her career as a model and actress and studied ballet, while also doing theatre. She was discovered by a child photographer, who worked for major European catalogue companies. Later, she worked internationally as a model, being represented by agencies in Europe, Asia and South Africa. In the 1990s while studying psychology at the Goethe University Frankfurt, she focused more intently on her acting career and studied drama. She works worldwide in films, television, and stage productions.
She has also sung background vocals for various bands, including Joe Cocker and Vanessa Mae. Through her passion and participation in extreme sports, Maxim magazine voted her as the "Action Girl".[citation needed]
After living part-time in Asia and Spain, she moved in 2008 to New York City and founded the film production company YMC Films in NY and in 2012 a second company in Germany, the YMC Entertainment GmbH.
