The following is a list of unproduced Zack Snyder projects in roughly chronological order. During his long career, American film director Zack Snyder has worked on several projects which never progressed beyond the pre-production stage under his direction. Some of these projects fell in development hell, were officially canceled, were in development limbo or would see life under a different production team.
2000s[edit]
S.W.A.T. film[edit]
On August 16, 2000, Snyder was attached to make his directorial feature film with the film adaptation of the 1970s television series S.W.A.T. for Columbia Pictures, eventually Snyder left and Clark Johnson ended up directing the film, and Snyder would instead make his directorial debut with the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead as his directorial debut.[1]
Mage film[edit]
On August 5, 2002, after F. Gary Gray left the film adaptation of Matt Wagner's comic book Mage,[2] Snyder was attached to make his directorial feature film with the adaptation for Spyglass Entertainment and will be distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, with John Rodgers writing the screenplay.[3][4] Snyder instead made his directorial debut with the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead, and the film rights reverted to Image Comics after this iteration fell apart. In August 2010, producer Lloyd Levin, who worked with Snyder on Watchmen, acquired the rights.[5]
Cobalt 60 film[edit]
On October 25, 2006, Snyder was attached to direct the film adaptation of Vaughn Bodē's sci-fi comic book Cobalt 60 for Universal Pictures, but Snyder was busy directing 300 and Watchmen around this point.[6]
X-Men: The Last Stand & R-rated Wolverine spinoff[edit]
In an interview on January 10, 2007, Snyder revealed that he was offered the opportunity to direct X-Men: The Last Stand for 20th Century Fox after having an interview with Hugh Jackman and Lauren Shuler Donner, but ultimately turned it down due to his commitment on 300. In the same interview, Snyder revealed that if he didn't adapt Watchmen, he would've made an R-rated Wolverine spinoff film.[7][8]
The Illustrated Man remake[edit]
On August 28, 2007, it was announced that Snyder was attached to direct and produce a remake of the 1969 film The Illustrated Man for Warner Bros. with Frank Darabont and Denise Di Novi producing and Alex Tse, who also wrote Snyder's Watchmen, set to write the screenplay.[9]
2010s[edit]
Heavy Metal segment[edit]
On March 12, 2010, Snyder was one of many directors attached to direct a segment of David Fincher's 3D animated Heavy Metal anthology film with Blur Studio, but the film never materialized.[10]
Legend of the Guardians sequels[edit]
Possible Watchmen HBO series[edit]
On October 1, 2015, Snyder was reportedly in talks with HBO to develop a Watchmen television series, but ultimately turned it down due to his commitments on the DC Extended Universe. Instead, in June 2017 it was announced that Damon Lindelof would be developing a television series continuation of the graphic novel instead, which began airing on HBO on October 20, 2019.[11][12][13][14]
300 anthology film franchise[edit]
On March 18, 2016, Snyder discussed that follow-up movies in the style of 300 would focus on other historical events such as the American Revolutionary War centered around George Washington, the Battle of the Alamo and a "lost legion"-like war movie set in China.[15] In May 2021, Snyder revealed that he had written an Alexander the Great film during the COVID-19 lockdown, that was intended to function as a conclusion to the 300 trilogy, but Snyder thought it could not function as a third 300 film because it evolved into having a greater focus on a love story between Alexander and Hephaestion, the script was retitled Blood and Ashes but it failed to get a greenlight by Warner Bros. Pictures.[16][17]
