ZAWFAN is a Malaysia nasyid group founded in 2020 by Hafiz Tamizi, Yasir Tamizi, and Fadzli Radzi. The group was born out of their longing for the sound created in dawah music in the 90s. Back then, most nasyid songs were produced with only vocals and percussions. The founder is also a singer of a nasyid vocal harmony group called Mirwana.
Background
Growing up and influenced by Raihan, NadaMurni and The Zikr, nasyid songs in the 90s, for ZAWFAN nasyid songs at the time are musically moderate and minimalist, but somehow well understood and appreciated by the Malay Muslim listeners and audience.
Style and Music
Clear, straightforward lyrics, simple melody, moderate harmony and backing vocals with minimal percussion create a nice sound that successfully highlights the Islamic message that they want to convey in the music.
ZAWFAN percussion arrangements are not limited to just East Asian percussion. Other percussion from Africa, Europe and Latin America can also be found in their tracks.
On their vocals, ZAWFAN is a trio composed of Baritone (Fadzli) alongside Tenors Hafiz and Yasir.
Even though, according to some critics, their music is inferior and elementary like the music during the 90s as compared to other contemporary pop music, they believe it is more effective in bringing the message of Islam across.
Backing Vocals
In the month of Ramadan 2021, ZAWFAN was featured as backing vocals in the song "Ramadhan Kareem" with Zul Rabbani and Munif Hijjaz.[1][2]. This is an earliest attempt made by the group to promote vocal harmony and percussion-only nasyid song. It was well received and got positive feedback from the listeners.
Munif Hijjaz is one of the respected figures in the Malaysian nasyid scene. The collaboration has introduced ZAWFAN to the current nasyid community and paved the way for ZAWFAN to start producing their own songs.
First Single
In 2021, ZAWFAN released their first single "Rasul Kita"[3]. A music video was released by the group on their Youtube channel[4].
"Rasul Kita" is an educational nasyid song dedicated to children as well as Muslim parents. The lyric reminds listeners of the names of 25 Prophets in Islam, singing repeatedly as a chorus, and invites people to take lessons from their journey of dawah[5].
"Rasul Kita" is written and produced by Hafiz Tamizi and ZAWFAN, and digitally distributed on all streaming platforms by Inteam Records. It has been uploaded once again and premiered on Inteam Digital Youtube channel[6]. "Rasul Kita" can be found on all digital music streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music and also on local radios like IKIMFM, ZAYAN and others.
2022 was a big milestone year for ZAWFAN when their first single "Rasul Kita" and another song they wrote, "Membina Khayra Ummah" were performed live on Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM)'s 51 year anniversary - Muktamar Sanawi [7]
