ZenMarket is a proxy buying service that shoppers can use for purchasing goods from Japan that ordinarily would not ship overseas.[1][2]
ZenMarket was officially formed in 2014 by 4 Ukraininan students and was originally only available in Ukrainian and Russian[3][4]. Since then, the service has grown the number of available languages available as well as spawned other side ventures such as Japanese eCommerce platform ZenPlus (formerly ZenMarketplace[3]), subscription box service ZenPop[3], overseas marketing service ZenPromo, as well as their own shipping method ZenExpress (2021)[5][6]. While these services were all part of the ZenMarket umbrella, in November 2022 these businesses, including ZenMarket itself, were all made into subsidiaries of the ZenGroup.
ZenMarket has reportedly exported over 5 million Japanese products to around 150 countries since conception.[7]
How the Service Works[edit]
The service works by providing users with a Japanese address to ship the purchased goods to, similar to a package forwarding service.
A shopper using a package forwarding service would usually make a purchase directly with a store themselves, but a purchase made on the ZenMarket platform is ordered from the Japanese seller and paid for by ZenMarket. This distinguishment would categorize ZenMarket as a proxy buying service, otherwise known as a deputy purchasing agency[8] or purchasing facilitator.[9]
Japanese sellers can communicate and ship their items as they would with their domestic Japanese customers, and purchasers can communicate through the company in the case they are unable to communicate in Japanese. Buyers also do not need to have a Japanese payment method as the payment process is undertaken by ZenMarket.
Once the goods arrive at the address provided by ZenMarket, the purchaser can organize shipping from Japan to an address of their choosing using ZenMarket's online interface. An additional feature of the service is the ability to consolidate purchases from multiple stores into one box before shipping overseas to lower international shipping costs compared to shipping each purchase individually.[10]
Growth[edit]
ZenMarket started with just a few staff in a small office in Northern Osaka. At the time they offered customer service only in Ukrainian. Over time they began adding different language versions which provide customer service, translations of their website and language specific marketing communications, enabling them to reach a global audience.
