ZerCustoms is a daily online media automobile magazine and news outlet.

It was founded in July 2006 by Ovidiu Capra in Bucharest, Romania. The first issue of the magazine was released on July 21, 2006. The magazine's main areas of interest include, among others, the automotive industry, motorcycling, motorsport and the associated technology and lifestyle. It is available internationally and its content can be reached through a range of various online media channels, apart from the official website. All ZerCustoms articles are licensed on a Creative Commons attribution-noncommercial license.[1]

History

ZerCustoms was founded in July 2006 by Ovidiu Capra as an automotive classifieds website. Soon after, in September 2006, it became an online automotive news outlet, focusing on the latest vehicle launches. In January 2007 ZerCustoms made publicly available a comprehensive and extensive database of car specifications, covering classic as well as modern models. In February 2008 ZerCustoms started focusing on other aspects of the automotive and motorcycle world too. These include motorsport events, technological advancements and various related environmental aspects.

In October 2011 ZerCustoms started offering a video section, which includes various reviews and opinions, as well as live coverage of various automotive and motorcycle shows and events.

On June 28, 2011 ZerCustoms became a registered trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office as an online magazine that provides information in the field of automobiles, motorsports, automobile racing and exhibitions. A few days later, on July 1, 2011, the registration of the ZerCustoms trademark was acknowledged by HighBeam[2]

On December 10, 2011, Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. cited ZerCustoms [3] as a reference, as the Italian car manufacturer applied with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for patenting a new process and system for manufacturing a new composite material.

Over the years, ZerCustoms was used as a source of information for various books and e-books such as Vinnie Mirchandani's The New Technology Elite [4] in which the author talks about how great companies optimize both technology consumption and production, and Cornel Stan's Alternative Propulsion for Automobiles [5]. In 2009, Clemens Hiraoka used information published by ZerCustoms to present his theory on the importance of connected services in the context of modern automotive industry [6]. In 2012, Gary L. Krupp used ZerCustoms' article on Honda's experimental home energy station to emphasize the importance of phasing in hydrogen fuel as a substitute for gasoline [7]. The magazine's article on Volvo's Driver Alert Control and Lane Departure Warning system from 2007 was cited seven years later by Aleksandar Čolić, Oge Marques and Borko Furht in their study on systems and solutions for detecting driver drowsiness [8]. Noriko Hikosaka Behling cited ZerCustoms in 2012 in his study [9] on the current technology challenges of fuel cell development and its future research needs. In 2006, Antonio Alvendia used information from ZerCustoms in his book [10] to present the Japanese drifting scene, as depicted in the hit movie The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

Apart from books and e-books, ZerCustoms was also cited by prestigious online automotive and technology publications, such as Autoblog.com[11] [12] [13] [14], Jalopnik.com [15] [16] [17] and Gizmodo.com [18]

In 2008 ZerCustoms chose the tagline "Speed doesn't kill. It's the stopping that gets you!", which was later used, in a slightly modified form, by Top Gear (2002 TV series)'s star presenter Jeremy Clarkson.

In 2009 ZerCustoms was included in the DMOZ [19] web directory, which was operated by AOL and maintained under the name Open Directory Project (ODP). In 2017, DMOZ changed its URL from dmoz.org to curlie.org.

On February 23, 2011, ZerCustoms suffered a considerable loss in traffic. This was the result of Google launching a new indexing algorithm. The Google Panda algorithm was meant to reward high-quality websites and diminish the presence of low-quality websites in their organic search engine results. As the Panda algorithm was tweaked over the following months, ZerCustoms gained back the initial traffic loss.

Over the years, ZerCustoms went through several design and structure changes. Most of them had a positive result from the reader's point of view, but some of them have not been so fortunate. However, the magazine's main goal is to offer the latest available information and the best possible user experience.

As with all online news outlets, ZerCustoms was the target of countless hack attempts, two of which have been successful. Founder and Editor-in-Chief Ovidiu Capra stated that, even though two of them have been successful, no personal user information was leaked, since the company does not store, nor record, this type of data.

In the last years, readers started using mobile devices, such as tablets and smartphones, more than regular desktop computers for receiving information. As a result of this trend, in 2015, ZerCustoms started offering a mobile version of their official website.

Contents

ZerCustoms takes into consideration various aspects of the automotive and motorsport world.

Vehicle Launches

As far as new vehicle launches go, ZerCustoms focuses mainly on new cars and motorcycles. However new planes, boats and even military vehicles are also covered within the magazine's articles. The publication features up-to-date information on both production vehicles as well as concepts. Innovative vehicle designs are highly regarded too. The information includes full official specifications, photographs, videos and first impressions.

Reviews

ZerCustoms magazine provides written and video reviews of the various types of vehicles it features. These reviews are published daily, and are meant to offer information about the featured vehicle, certain aspects of the vehicle, comparisons with similar products and what the potential buyer could expect from it.

Motorsport

ZerCustoms offers information regarding various motorsport events, highlights, new relevant technologies, regulations and business decisions. It also offers the opportunity for motorsport fans to express their opinion on these matters and to exchange ideas. Some of the main motorsport areas, but not limited to, covered by the magazine include Formula One (F1), World Rally Championship (WRC), NASCAR, MotoGP, DTM, INDYCAR, Dakar Rally and the X Games.

Technology

A special role of the magazine's "mission" is to offer detailed information on new automotive aftermarket technologies. ZerCustoms also promotes the latest developments in car and motorcycle design. These are meant to improve and personalize products which are already publicly available on the market.

Environment

ZerCustoms covers various issues regarding the environment and its rather obvious changes. From alternative fuels to new eco-friendly technologies, the magazine's articles include information about innovative engines (motors), new means of transportation (as long as they don't take out the passion and emotion out of the "equation"), and other aspects of this rather sensible subject. Everyone is welcomed to join the debate in order to express their opinions, concerns, and ideas.
