The Groeve Zeven Wegen, also known as Geologisch monument Zevenwegen or Flint Deposit Zevenwegen, is a quarry and geological monument located in the municipality of Vaals, in the South Limburg region of the Netherlands. The quarry is situated in the southwest of the Vijlenerbos forest on the Plateau of Vijlen, near the site called Zevenwegen, a notable area within the Vijlenerbos.[1] Close to the monument is the junction of Eperbaan and Zevenwegenweg.
Nearby is the Geologisch monument Zandsteenblokken.
Geology
During the Cretaceous period, the area of South Limburg was submerged under a Cretaceous sea, resulting in the deposition of a 300-meter thick sedimentary layer consisting of clay, sand, and limestone. This sequence of limestone layers includes, from oldest to youngest, the Kalksteen van Vijlen, Kalksteen van Lixhe, and Kalksteen van Lanaye.[2][3] Archived on July 1, 2022.</ref>
Due to erosion, the Tertiary sandstone cover was removed, exposing the limestone beneath. Over centuries, a significant portion of the limestone was dissolved, for example, by rainwater seeping through the soil. This process led to the removal of about 55 meters of limestone. The insoluble components, primarily flint, remained as flint eluvium in the soil, consisting of flint, loam, and sand.[3][4][2]
Above the flint eluvium, a layer of loess from the Laagpakket van Schimmert was deposited over thousands of years by wind in Aeolian processes.[3]
The dissolution of the limestone led to the formation of numerous geological organ pipes in the forest, appearing as dish-shaped depressions on the surface.[2]
Fossils found in the flint eluvium include silicified sea urchins, with the species Echinocorys sp. being particularly notable.[2]
