10,000 Dawns is a prose science fiction series created by James Wylder and published by Arcbeatle Press. It is set in a multiverse known as the Dawns, and the events that occur around that. The first three books were exclusively written by Wylder, after which, other authors would make up the main contributions to the series.

Originally, the series focused on character Graelyn Scythes and Archimedes Von Abernade, but soon expanded to include other characters.

It is known for having multiple crossovers with the Doctor Who universe, particularly spin-offs Faction Paradox and Cwej: Down the Middle, as well as having positive LGBTQ+ representation.

Development[edit]

The series started out as an online weekly series, published on James Wylder's website every Thursday, with illustrations by Annie Zhu. An audiobook of each chapter was released by the Southgate Media Group. Wylder described the process as "crazy trying to co-ordinate and balance everything," but they felt that the positive response was worth it.[1][2] The published version of the series would mark Wylder's eighth book published. [3]

For the release of Death and Doubling Cubes, Wylder hired Rachel Johnson to design the cover, as well as the illustrations inside of the novel. She described the process as, "a tremendously fun experience", noting the influence of pulp sci-fi as a part of her influence on the design.[4] Wylder noted that the story, while set in the same universe as the previous book, did not act as a direct sequel; instead, it acted as a stand-alone story with new characters. [5]

During the promotion for Poor Man's Iliad, the series was given a promotion in Eruditorum Press, where it was revealed that Doctor Who and Faction Paradox writer Simon Bucher-Jones would be contributing a story, as well as Star Wars Tales contributor Nathan P. Butler.[6]

2017 marked the first official crossover with a Doctor Who related character, with the release of the online story Rachel Survived, featuring Rachel Edwards from the Faction Paradox novel Head of State.[7] [8] This would be followed up with two more online crossovers, White Canvas, which would include elements from the Eighth Doctor Adventures, and The Gendar Conspiracy in 2019.[9] [10] All three were later collected into the anthology 10,000 Dawns: The Outer Universe Collection. [11]

In 2020, it was announced that Cwej: Down the Middle would contain "elements from the 10,000 Dawns series".[12] [13] The same year would also see the release of The Forgotten Heroines of the 10,000 Dawns, which was designed as an, "April Fool's Day event". [14] Elements of the series also appeared in the novelization of Cyberon. [15]

On January 8th, 2021, Arcbeatle Press stated that writer Sam Maleski, who'd worked on A 10,000 Dawns Christmas and How to Survive the Winter, would no longer be contributing to their projects, including 10,000 Dawns, after allegations of abusive behavior.[16][17]

In December 2021, a collected edition of both How to Survive the Winter and Monsters Among Us was released, in the anthology Making Spirits Bright. Aidan Mason, the author of the short story "Aesthetic", noted that the experience of recieving a paperback version of the story was, "one of the greatest feelings in the world", noting that seeing his name in a published book was a massive accomplishment.[18]

Spin-Off[edit]

A spin-off series, Lady Aesculapius, ran in 2019 from September 28th to December 25th. Much like its parent series, it ran in weekly segments, with Lady Aesculapius having thirteen 'episodes' and a Christmas special.[21]

Starring the character of Lady Aesculapius, alongside Jason Jackson, the character first appeared in a 10,000 Dawns story designed to celebrate the anniversary of Doctor Who as a parody of the character of the Doctor in the unofficial poetry book, An Eloquence of Space and Time. As the series progressed, however, the character became more complex.[22][23]

Originally, the series was supposed to be, "a bit of naff fun" according to Wylder, but the story evolved through development to include darker topics.[24]

Much like the parent series, Lady Aesculapius included a crossover with Doctor Who, with the fifth story, Life After Death, featuring characters from the series.

On November 13th 2021, it was announced that Aidan Mason and Dillon O'Hara would be co-writing a "replacement story" for the first series.[25] [26]

Reception[edit]

The series has received overall positive reviews from critics and fans.
