The 1998 Women's Premier Soccer League was the first season of the league. Sanctioned as a Regional Amateur League sanctioned by USASA, the league was created when the four Northern California teams from the West Division of the USISL's W-League broke away to form a standalone competition along with two teams from San Diego. The schedule ran during the summer months of 1998. Silicon Valley Red Devils were the league's first champion.
