The 2006 CSL season was the 9th season in Italia Shooters participation in the Canadian Soccer League. The season marked an historic milestone in the club's history as the Vaughan based club claimed their first CSL Championship after defeating match favorites the Serbian White Eagles. The season also marked the introduction of the International and National divisions as part of the CSL reforms issued by Commissioner Cary Kaplan. As a result the organization incorporated an Italian image and began play as the Italia Shooters. In the regular season Italia achieved mediocre results, but managed to secure a postseason berth after finishing third in their division.

In the postseason the Shooters successfully defeated the Brampton Stallions, Toronto Croatia, in order to claim the championship. In the Open Canada Cup the furthest Italia reached was the quarterfinals, and two players were selected for the annual CSL All-Star match against Clyde F.C.[1] Kadian Lecky was Italia's top goalscorer in the 2006 season scoring 4 goals.

Summary[edit]

As part of the reforms conducted by CSL Commissioner Cary Kaplan the Vaughan Shooters became inaugural members of the International Division, and were renamed the Italia Shooters.[2] The intention of the reforms was to re-kindle the spirit of the CNSL days by promoting ethnic rivalries to increase match attendance.[3][4]The Shooters retained the managerial services of Carmine Isacco for the 2006 season, with his selection of players primarily remaining those with Canadian Interuniversity Sport and Ontario Soccer League experience. After a mediocre start to the season Isacco resigned as a head coach on August 17, 2006 in order to fully devote his time with the Toronto Varsity Blues soccer program.[5] His immediate replacement was team owner Tony De Thomasis, who managed to revamp the team's performance by only losing one match in ten matches.

De Thomasis efforts resulted in a playoff berth after finishing third in the division. In the postseason the club received some luck early on as they advanced to the next round by a forfeit from the Brampton Stallions.[6] Their opponents in the semifinals were Toronto Croatia, and with a goal from Jason De Thomasis they reached the championship final for the fourth consecutive year.[7] Their opposition in the finals were the International Division champions Serbian White Eagles FC a team where the majority of players had European experience.[8] During the match Italia performed the miracle needed at Esther Shiner Stadium from a lone goal from Anthony Adur to claim their first CSL Championship in a 1–0 victory.[9][10]
