The 2009 CSL season was the 12th season in Italia Shooters participation in the Canadian Soccer League. The club's season began on May 15, 2009 in a home match against Trois-Rivières Attak, which resulted in a 3-0 defeat. For the seventh consecutive season the Vaughan organization clinched a postseason berth by finishing third in the International Division. In the postseason the Shooters managed to advance to the second round after defeating St. Catharines Wolves 7-1 on goals on aggregate.[1] In the semifinals Italia faced National Division champions Trois-Rivières Attak, where they were eliminated from the playoff competition.[2]
Summary[edit]
In 2009, Vaughan became associated with Woodbridge S.C., and Unionville S.C. as a result both organizations began operating as the club's reserve teams in the Reserve Division.[3] Rob Pugliese was recruited as the head coach for the 2009 season after Carmine Isacco resumed his managerial duties with York University. Under Pugliese's tenure the roster went through another fundamental change with the traditional veteran core players returning with the addition of players with USL A-League/First Division experience finalizing the squad.
In the regular season the Shooters produced a mediocre season, but still managed to clinch a postseason berth by finishing third in their division. In the postseason Italia revived their team performance by defeating St. Catharines in a two-game series with 7–1 goals on aggregate.[4][5] In the next round they faced the National Division champions Trois-Rivieres where in both games they tied the series 4–4 on aggregate with the Attak scoring the winning goal in overtime.[6] While in the Reserve division Woodbrige S.C. reached the championship, but were eliminated by TFC Academy II.[7]
