On 3 February 2022, a Cessna 172N single-engine aircraft crashed in Þingvallavatn, a rift valley lake around 50 km from Reykjavík, Iceland, while on a sight-seeing tour from Reykjavík Airport. All four people on board were killed. The plane initial disappearance resulted in Iceland's largest search and rescue operation for a missing aircraft in over 40 years.

Accident[edit]

The plane left Reykjavík Airport at 10:30 and its flight plan was for a two-hour flight. A security camera footage from a nearby summerhouse later revealed that roughly a hour later the plane seemed to be attempting either a controlled landing or a touch-and-go landing in Þingvallavatn, which was covered with thin ice at the time, when it crashed and sank.[1] When the plane did not return as scheduled, it was reported missing. The resulting search operation was the largest for a missing aircraft in Iceland in over 40 years, since the disappearance of TF-ROM in May 1981,[2] with over 1,000 members of Iceland's Search and Rescue organizations participating in the search.[3] The wreck of the plane was discovered on 5 February in Þingvallavatn,[4] at the depth of 48 meters around 800 meters away from shore. The following day, a radio controlled submarine found four bodies in a 300-meter radius around the plane.[5] It was believed that all of the occupants escaped the plane but where unable to swim to the shore in the freezing waters.[6]

Occupants[edit]

The pilot of the plane was Haraldur Diego, one of Iceland's most prominent aviators and a pioneer of photography tours.[3][7] The passengers were part of a group of ten who were in Iceland to take part in an advertising campaign for the Belgian clothing line Suspicious Antwerp.[8][9][10]
