The men's horizontal bar at the 2022 All-Japan Artistic Gymnastics Championships was held on 18 and 19 June 2022 at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium in Shibuya, Tokyo.[1] 23 gymnasts from 13 clubs all over the country participated in the event.[2] Shohei Kawakami became the champion, while Yusuke Tanaka won the silver and Takeru Kitazono got the bronze.[3]
Background[edit]
The defending champion, Daiki Hashimoto, and bronze medalist, Takaaki Sugino both qualified for the final, while last year runner-up, Kohei Uchimura, retired in January 2022.
Qualification[edit]
The maximum of 24 male gymnasts would be qualified to compete for the men's individual all-around event, following these criteria:[2]
- Finalists from Japan national team at the 2020 Summer Olympics or 2021 World Championships. Daiki Hashimoto, who won the Olympic gold medal, qualified directly to the final.
- Winner of the 2021 All-Japan Championships.
- Top FX performers at the all-around qualifying and tryout.
- Among the top 10 at the NHK Trophy, gymnasts who didn't qualify can perform for national team selection, but wouldn't advance to the final.
Competition format[edit]
The top 8 qualifiers in the qualification phase advanced to the apparatus final. The finalists performed an additional exercise. Qualification scores were then ignored, with only final round scores counting.
