2022 FIFA World Cup statistics
The 2022 FIFA World Cup is an international men's football tournament that is taking place between 20 November and 18 December 2022 in Qatar. The competition is structured in the typical round-robin style during the initial group stage, with the top two teams of each group qualifying to the knockout stage.[1]
The statistics within the tournament include: goals, assists, scores, wins and losses record, match awards, squad records, disciplinary issues, statistics accumulated over multiple world cups, the overall results and the stadium statistics. Matches that were decided by penalty shoot-outs were counted as draws. Any records set during the 2022 FIFA World Cup covered under the appropriate headings for the specific record.

A total of 32 teams reached the 2022 World Cup, including 13 European, 4 South American, 5 African, 4 North American and 6 Asian countries. The 2022 FIFA World Cup had many notable absences of teams including reigning European champions Italy, Nigeria, Chile and Colombia.[64]
Coaches[edit]
- Oldest coach: Louis van Gaal (Netherlands) – 71 years and 123 days in the quarter-final game against Argentina, after Óscar Tabárez (71 years and 125 days at the 2018 World Cup) and Otto Rehhagel (71 years and 317 days at the 2010 World Cup), he is the third oldest World Cup coach.[65]
- Youngest coach: Lionel Scaloni (Argentina) – 44 years and 190 days in the first game against Saudi Arabia.[66]
- Country with most coaches: Argentina (Ecuador, Mexico and Argentina), Portugal (South Korea, Iran and Portugal) and Spain (Spain, Belgium and Qatar) with three coaches. This is followed by England (Canada and England) and France (France and Saudi Arabia) with two coaches.
- Coaches who were former players: Ten coaches have also taken part in World Cups as players, most notably Rigobert Song (Cameroon), who represented his country in 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2010.[67]
- Teams with foreign coaches: Nine teams are trained by foreign coaches, including one team (Costa Rica) of coach whose home country (Colombia) did not qualify for the 2022 World Cup.[68]

- Goal record: Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) scored in his fifth World Cup, setting the all-time record for most different and successive World Cups scored in.[55]
- Appearance record: Andrés Guardado (Mexico), Lionel Messi (Argentina) and Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) participated in the World Cup for the fifth time, equaling the record of Mexico's Rafael Márquez and Antonio Carbajal and Germany player Lothar Matthäus.[70]
- Oldest player: Atiba Hutchinson (Canada) is the oldest player at the age of 39 years and 298 days. He came on in the group match against Morocco in the 60th minute.[citation needed]
- Youngest player: Youssoufa Moukoko (Germany) is the youngest player at the age of 18 years and 3 days. He came on in the group match against Japan in the 90th minute.[citation needed]
- 31 teams nominated at least one player from its country clubs, but only Qatar and Saudi Arabia exclusively fielded players of its own domestic league. By contrast, Senegal nominated only players from foreign leagues.
- The most players (164) are active in clubs based in England, the majority of them in the Premier League, with some in the lower leagues. In total 29 of the 32 team squads have players who play in England.
- One player each plays in the leagues of Colombia, Hungary and United Arab Emirates.
- From the leagues of countries that did not qualify for the World Cup, the Italian Serie A has the strongest representation (for the second time in a row) with 68 players.
