On January 28, 2023, a mass shooting occurred at a home in the Beverly Crest neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, United States. Three people were killed and four others wounded in a targeted attack. The alleged targets were not harmed. Three suspects were arrested in May 2023 and charged with the killings.

The shooting occurred eight days after another mass shooting at a dance studio in the nearby city of Monterey Park.[1]

Shooting[edit]

Around 2:30 a.m. (UTC−7) on January 28, 2023, police responded to emergency calls of shots fired at a short-term rental home at 2700 Ellison Drive in the Beverly Crest neighborhood of Los Angeles.[1][2] The neighborhood, located south of Beverly Hills, is known as upscale and wealthy.[1] A senior Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) source stated that three people were found dead in a car outside the home.[1] After charges were filed, prosecutors alleged that the victims were driving home from a concert when they were attacked in what prosecutors said was "an ambush of semi-automatic gunfire".[3] Over thirty rounds were fired at the scene.[4] Investigators believe the attack was targeted and suspect it occurred during a party or other social function at the home.[1] The two alleged targets were not harmed.[3]

Victims[edit]

Three women, aged 26, 29, and 33, died at the scene.[4] The victims, who were residents of Chicago, allegedly traveled to Los Angeles to support a Chicago rapper.[4] Of the four wounded, two were in critical condition.[1]

Aftermath[edit]

Investigation[edit]

Police were determining a motive for the attack.[1] They interviewed neighbors and witnesses and looked for surveillance footage during their investigation.[1] On March 29, the LAPD served a search warrant at a house in Beverly Hills in connection to the shooting.[2] Based on witness testimony and surveillance footage, the police believe the suspects were driving a blue Tesla vehicle with damage to the right fender and no license plates.[2]

Arrests[edit]

On May 12, LAPD personnel and prosecutors announced that three Chicago residents had been arrested for the shooting.[4] 28-year-olds Daries Stanford and Dejean Thompkins, along with 22-year-old Dontae Williams, were each charged with three counts of murder, six counts of attempted murder, and assault with a semi-automatic firearm.[3][4] The three suspects were alleged by LAPD personnel to be gang members.[4] The three men were respectively arrested in Gary, Indiana; New York City; and Chicago.[4] Thompkins also faced an additional charge of murder for a fatal shooting in December 2022.[3][5] The suspects faced extradition to California after their arrests.[4]
