On February 15, 2023, a shooter opened fire inside the Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso, Texas, United States, killing 1 person and injuring 3 others.[1] Two suspects have been taken into custody.[2]

Shooting[edit]

Shots were fired around the area of the food court in the Cielo Vista Mall at 5:05 pm MST.[3][4] An off duty officer swiftly, together with mall security responded by 5:08 pm MST and had taken in one suspect without usage of firearms.[5] Police stated that the first calls came at 5:10 pm MST.[6]

Aftermath and Response[edit]

Hours after the shooting, police had taken another male suspect into custody.[7][5] The motive is unknown.[2] A weapon was found at the scene.[8] The area is still considered a crime scene and under lockdown by police.[5]

The shooting received extensive coverage for its location; it occurred adjacent to a Walmart store that was the scene of a previous mass shooting in 2019.[9] Some people who were at the store during the 2023 shooting had been present during the 2019 shooting;[5] due to this the shooting was also compared to the shooting at Michigan State University days prior which also saw many bystanders experience their second shooting.[10]

Texas governor Greg Abbott announced that he had spoken to El Paso mayor Oscar Leeser and had offered state assistance, though his response was criticized by some of his opponents.[11] Democratic house representative Veronica Escobar of the 16th congressional district in Texas (which includes El Paso), stated on Twitter that "Today’s shooting at the Cielo Vista Mall has brought back traumatic memories for many of us."[12] El Paso native Beto O'Rourke, Escobar's predecessor, expressed outrage over another attack in the city. House representative Ritchie Torres (D-NY) stated that he is "damn tired of having to see people running for their lives almost daily in public places."[11]

Victims[edit]

Two men[13] were transported to a local hospital in critical condition,[14][15] while another was taken to a different hospital and is in fair condition.[5] A family reunification center has been established at Burges High School's gym.[1]
