On January 24, 2023, a shooting occurred in Yakima, Washington, United States. The gunman, later identified as 21-year-old Jarid Haddock, killed three people and was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound hours later.

Shooting[edit]

The assailant carried out two separate shootings, one inside a Circle K convenience store at approximately 3:30 a.m. and another outside, minutes apart. Inside the Circle K, he immediately shot a 40-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man buying food. He then exited the store and shot a 54-year-old man in the parking lot.[1] The shooter then allegedly shot into his own car several times after locking himself out, before fleeing. The victims were apparently chosen at random and there was no apparent interaction between the shooter and the victims.[2]

Police surrounded the gunman's home, but he was not there. The gunman approached a woman in a Target parking lot and borrowed her phone, using it to call his mother and tell her what he had done. After the gunman left the woman called police, and the gunman was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound behind a warehouse.[3]

Perpetrator[edit]

According to Yakima Police Chief Matt Murray, 21-year-old Jarid Haddock, the individual suspected to have been responsible for the shooting, took his own life behind some warehouses hours later. The suspect had used a stranger's phone to contact his mother and made statements that incriminated himself, including confessing to the killings. At the time of his death, the suspect was in possession of a large amount of ammunition and a semi-automatic handgun. The motive behind the shooting is still being investigated.[4]
