On 3 November 2024, a grenade attack occurred at the Sunday market near the Tourist Reception Centre in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, injuring 12 civilians. The attack took place around 2:10 PM IST when suspected militants threw a hand grenade at a security picket, causing the explosion to injure nearby shoppers.[1]
Response
The injured, including eight men and four women, were taken to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital for treatment. Medical officials reported that all injuries were stable. The incident caused panic among the shoppers, prompting police and paramilitary forces to evacuate the area and launch a search operation for the attackers.[2]
Reactions
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack, calling it “deeply disturbing” and emphasizing that there can be no justification for targeting innocent civilians. He urged security forces to take swift action to end the recent spate of violence in the region.[3]
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary and other local leaders also visited the injured at the hospital, expressing their support and condemning the attack as a cowardly act meant to instill fear in the population.[4]
Investigation
Authorities have filed a first information report (FIR) under various legal sections, including the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. An investigation is ongoing to identify the attackers and their motives, as this incident marks one of several militant attacks in the region in recent weeks.[5]
