The 2025 Solapur earthquake was a minor seismic event that occurred on 4 April 2025, at approximately 11:22 AM IST, in the Solapur district of Maharashtra, India. The earthquake measured 2.6 on the Richter scale, and its epicenter was located near Sangola, at a depth of 5 kilometers (3.1 miles), according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).[1][2][3][4][5]
Despite its low magnitude, the tremor was felt in several parts of the district, including Pandharpur, Sangole, and Mangalwedha. There were no reported casualties or significant damage to infrastructure or property. The local administration and disaster management teams conducted rapid assessments and confirmed the absence of any major effects.[3][4][5][6]
Tectonic setting
The state of Maharashtra lies in a relatively stable seismic zone, typically classified under Zone III of the Seismic Zoning Map of India, which represents a moderate seismic risk. [7]
However, the region has experienced notable seismic activity in the past, including the 1993 Latur earthquake, which resulted in significant casualties and damage. Earthquakes such as the 2025 Solapur event are reminders of the potential for seismic activity even in less active zones.[3][4][5][8]
Impact
The tremors were weak but noticeable in nearby towns and villages. Residents reported mild shaking of household objects. There was no disruption to essential services, and routine life continued as normal post-event. The Maharashtra Disaster Management Authority remained on alert following the tremor but did not report any emergency response actions beyond initial checks.[3][4][5][9][1][5]
