History[edit]
The 2 Military hospital is located in Wynberg, Cape Town, a site of one of the oldest military camps in the country. Construction of the Wynberg Camp hospital first began in 1797 and decades later, in 1859, the War Department (United Kingdom) planned to make further modifications to it. These modifications involved the addition of a Sanatorium at Wynberg Camp[2] to allow for the capacity to bring in sick troops from India. However, they were never brought to completion and eventually cost the War Department a huge sum of £80,000.
On November 29, 1899, Wynberg Camp was declared a military hospital. This meant that the hospital could now officially receive soldiers who had returned from the front in Second Boer War and were wounded or sick. The Garrison Officers' Mess hall was used as an officers' hospital, and the wood and iron troops quarters were converted into wards. The barracks, however, were insufficient accommodations, and to resolve this issue, a tented field hospital was erected at the camp. The barracks and the tents were named No.1 General Hospital and No.2 General Hospital, respectively.
With the establishment of the South African Medical Service in 1979, the old Wynberg Camp General Hospital was demolished and the 2 Military Hospital was then built upon the same grounds in its place.
SAMHS[edit]
The South African National Defence Force later came into existence[3] after the 1994 advent of democracy. As a consequence, the South African Medical Service was disbanded and replaced by the South African Military Health Service (SAMHS).
The 2 Military Hospital complex was allocated the status of a level 3 specialist facility according to United Nations Medical Support doctrine.[4] This level 3 status equates to a regional hospital in Department of Health (South Africa) terminology.
In 2013, the hospital underwent a major refurbishment,[5] at a cost of 600 million rands. This project was completed in 2017 and included the construction of a new administration and logistics complex, seven new theatres, and ten new wards.
Dress Regulations[edit]
In June 2018, a Muslim member of 2 Military Hospital challenged the SANDF dress regulations[6] citing that the policy did not accommodate the use of religious attire with military uniform. Compliance with the regulations as they previously were would have meant going against her religious beliefs. Following a legal process, charges were withdrawn against the Muslim member, and the dress policy was amended to include the wear of Muslim headscarves and other religious accessories with the SANDF uniform.
