The Association of Foreign Investors in Real Estate (AFIRE) is a nonprofit, membership-based professional association for international real estate investors focused on commercial property in the United States[1]. The membership of AFIRE includes more than 200 institutional investors, executives, and service providers from 24 countries representing an estimated $3 trillion in assets under management.

AFIRE is governed by a global board of directors, made up of member volunteers. The board is currently headed by chairman Donald M. Wise, president and CEO of Metzler Real Estate[2]. The organization is led by Gunnar Branson, who joined as CEO of AFIRE in 2018[3] after serving as the president and CEO of the National Association of Real Estate Managers (NAREIM) from 2011 to 2018. Prior to Branson, the association was led by James (Jim) Fetgatter, who served as AFIRE CEO from 1992 to 2018[4]

History[edit]

Headquartered Washington, DC, with offices in the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, AFIRE was established by a small group of executives working for a Dutch-owned real estate company interested in building a community of fellow real estate leaders and international institutional investors. AFIRE’s articles of incorporation were filed in 1987 and the association held its first board meeting in 1988. In 2019, AFIRE held its 30thannual membership meeting in Seattle, Washington.

Events[edit]

AFIRE hosts several member meetings, topic-focused summits, and exclusive gatherings every year, including a dedicated presence at MIPIM and EXPO REAL. Meetings are held at cities around the world, and past speakers have including international business, government, and world leaders [5], such as Henry Kissinger, Bob Dole, Colin Powell, George Bush, Condoleeza Rice, Bill Clinton, John Howard, Madeleine Albright, John Major, and others.
