Abu Muhammad Abdullah bin Al-Hassan bin Ahmad Al-Ansari Al-Maliki Al-Qurtubi, also known as Ibn Al-Qurtubi (Arabic: ابن القرطبي ). Ibn Al-Qurtubi (10 November 1161 - 15 August 1214) (21 Dhul Qi`dah 556-7 Rabi` 611), was a Muslim scholar, linguist and Andalusian Arab writer of the twelfth century CE / 6th Hijri. Originally from Córdoba, he was born and raised in Malaga. He studied with the scholars of his time and became in the lead in teaching before he was twenty. He is considered on the memorizers of Hadith and also stood out in reading and is one of the linguist poets. He also sermoned for a while in The Mosque of Malaga. He has many writings published and passed away in his hometown.[1][2][3]

CV[edit]

He is Abu Muhammad Abdullah bin Al-Hasan bin Ahmed bin Yahya bin Abdullah Al-Ansari Al-Malqi Al-Qurtubi. His family was originally from Cordoba, and his father then moved to Malaga. He was born on Dhu al-Qa’dah 21 556/10 November 1161 in Malaga where he was raised and taught. He was first taught by his father, then by the scholars of his time like: Abu Zaid Al-Suhaili, Al-Qasim bin Dahman, Abu Abdullah bin Al-Fakhr, and Abu Ishaq bin Qarqul. He became in the lead in teaching before he was twenty.[1]

He travelled across Andalusia to meet their scholars and visited Seville where he met Abu Bakr bin Al-Jedd, Abu Bakr bin Saf, and Jafar bin Mada. He then visited Granada and Murcia and traveled to Ceuta. He sermoned for a while in The  Mosque of Malaga. He also had a council in the mosque for Hadith other than his teaching council.

Ibn Al Qurtubi passed away on 7 Rabi` al-Akhir 611/ 15 August 1214 in his hometown.[1]

Career[edit]

Ibn Al Qurtubi was a major reciter of his time, and the science of hadith prevailed over him. He also was a writer of prose and a regulator. Omar Farroukh said about him: "his poetry was good, but he was not much of a flirter. The most important thing he has in writing poems are verses which he made as scales of poetry and used them in the meter of poetry, which he inserted in the beginning of each verse the name of the meter on which that verse was written for those who couldn't tell which meter of poetry was used on their own so they use this as a reference".
