Abdullahi Alim (Arabic عبدالله عليم, born 20 October 1992) is a Somali-Australian economist, organizer and writer with deep knowledge in the history and science behind successful social justice movements. He currently leads The Davos Lab at the World Economic Forum.[1]
Early Life[edit]
Born at the height of the Somali civil war, Alim and his family sought asylum in Perth, Australia in 1998.[2] He graduated from the Australian Islamic College in 2009. He also studied Actuarial Science at Curtin University[3] and Finance at the University of Western Australia. [4] Alim is a Stanford Graduate School ofBusiness alumni. [5] He resides currently in Geneva, Switzerland.[6]
Career[edit]
Besides his work at the World Economic Forum, Alim sits on the Board of Trustees of The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust under the leadership of Prince Harry and Meghan Markles. Moreover, he serves on the Global Advisory Board of Apolitical Academy[7] alongside CEOs such as Axelle Lemaire, Daniella Ballou-Aares, and former politicians such as Alexander Stubb, Helen Clark, and Marietje Schaake and other leading activists seeking to support nontraditional candidates for public office.
Abdullahi originally led more than 100 youth-led movements across Africa and the Middle East as the World Economic Forum’s regional focal point for the Global Shapers Community[1]. In that role, he oversaw the governance, impact, and growth of social justice initiatives operating under challenging circumstances. Some successful campaigns were recorded at the time, such as the VisaFreeAfrica.
He currently leads The Davos Lab at the World Economic Forum, a citizen-centered policy and impact incubator for nations seeking to rebuild after the worst economic, public health, climate, and social justice crises of the current era.[8]
Alim is also a sought-after commentator represented by ICMI Speakers and Entertainers.[9] In 2020, he led public conversations with Mark Bouris AM[10], Prince Harry and Meghan Markles [11] and served as a strategic advisor to American model and businesswoman, Beverly Johnson on a project to help embed racial equity in global fashion supply chains.[12] [13]
In 2017, Abdullahi Alim beat out Troye Sivan and Daniel Ricciardo as the Western Australia's Young Australian of the Year Award[14] and was a finalist[15] Young Australian of the Year for 2017.[16]
