Abdulrahman Elsamni (Arabic: عبدالرحمن السمني‎; born May 30, 1988) is an Egyptian lecturer and journalist, known for advocating the rights of refugees and migrants. Elsamni, who teaches Mass Communication in the Faculty of Arts at Ain Shams University in Egypt,[1][2][3] is also a poet,[4][5] who regularly publishes in Egyptian newspapers,[6][7][8] such as Al Akhbar and Elwatan.[9][10]

Refugees[edit]

Elsamni earned his master's degree in Journalism and Mass Communication[11][12] at the American University in Cairo,[13][14] where his thesis discussed the framing of Arab refugees on CNN.[15][16] His research work on migration media coverage has been published with the European Union, Ethical Journalism Network,[17] and International Centre for Migration Policy Development.[18]

He pinpointed the drawbacks of media reporting on refugees, such as framing them in terms of numbers or as a homogeneous mass, without stating their individual experiences, own needs, personal stories, and human tragedies. In a study presented at the Peace Institute in Ljubljana in August 2017, the Slovenian author Asja Hrvatin agreed with Elsamni that mass media can contribute to the dehumanization of refugees through this lack of reporting on human and personal stories.[19][20]

Elsamni's research work on media framing of refugees was cited in different scholarly works that discussed the framing of refugees from various perspectives, such as narrative policy framework,[21] social integration process,[22] comparative analysis of tweets,[23] and news headline analysis;[24] in addition to media consumption patterns of news,[25] and media framing of other issues, such as human trafficking.[26]
