Abedin Limpao Osop, the first Chancellor of Mindanao State University – General Santos City (MSU-GSC).[1]

He was one of the very first Engineering graduates of Mindanao State University in Marawi City in 1967. He then became an Alumni Regent of the university, and later admitted to the Faculty. He consequently became the Director for External Studies of MSU, which was an office that oversaw external MSU community high school campuses around the island of Mindanao.[2]
He was studying Law and Masters, together with my mother in the early 70s, but was recalled by the university because they needed his services back. The university during these times was on a brink of shutting down due to lack of enrollees and they believed that Tatay may be able to do something about it. He introduced the “College Bound Program” which served as a supplementary scholarship program for high school graduates during that time. Fortunately, this program turned out to be successful in encouraging more enrollees and the university stood still because of it.

He, my mother and 3 elder children migrated in General Santos City in 1976 and became the director of MSU Community High School, one of the schools his former office was overseeing back in Marawi.
His vision and with the help of the people of General Santos made this Community High School to grow and later become what we now know as Mindanao State University – General Santos, a fully operational state university that has been offering postgraduate studies, engineering, business, agriculture, arts and letters, sciences, fisheries and providing scholarships and free education to the indigenous peoples of Mindanao, and inexpensive tertiary education to the Mindanaoans since the late 70s.[3] He availed for an early retirement in 1988 and used his retirement fund to buy jeepneys and equipment for farming. He wanted to raise potatoes and drive jeepneys for a living that time. Nevertheless, he heeds to his calling of going back to the academe in 1994. So he went from Chancellor to Farmer to Jeepney Driver to Professor.[4]
Legacy[edit]
Engr. Abedin Limpao Osop, the first Chancellor (who was then the Director) of the campus was able to acquire a 3.3-hectare lot as a donation from city government. [5]It gave the impetus for the offering of various College degree programs. Later, the acquisition of a 156-hectare area in Tambler (now in Bgy. Fatima) enabled MSU-GSC to strengthen its functions in instruction research and extension, subsequently affirming the significant role it plays within its areas of coverage. Concrete proofs of this are the establishment of its Research and Development Center & Office of Extension Services, and in the growth of its various colleges: Agriculture, Fisheries, Business Administration & Accountancy, Engineering, Education, Natural Sciences & Mathematics, Social Science and Humanities and its College of Law (extension classes of the main campus).[6] Moreover, it has also opened two advanced education degree programs, the Master in Public Administration and Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) as a response to a popular demand articulated by Socsksargen public administrators and academicians.[7][8][9]
