Abu al-Hasan Ali bin Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Bashaer al-Siqilli, also known as Ibn Abi al-Bishr al-Siqilli(Arabic: ابن أبي البشر الصقلي), was an Arab Sicilian poet of the eleventh century CE / fifth AH, who lived most of his life in Fatimid Egypt. He was born in the western island of Sicily in the Emirate of Sicily. After migrating to the Fatimid State in Egypt, due to the Norman conquest, he contacted its rulers. The years of his born and death aren't known. His first record was achieved by Hilal Naji in 1976.[1][2][3][4]
Cv[edit]
He is Abu al-Hasan Ali bin Abi al-Qasim Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Bashar, or al-Bashaer al-Balanobi of Sicily. His father was a man of science and literature.
Abu al-Hasan al-Balanoubi was born there during the Emirate of Sicily, he then migrated from it to the Fatimid state in Egypt after the Norman conquest of southern Italy and made it his home. In Egypt, Abu Muhammad Abdullah bin Yahya bin Hammoud Al-Khuraimi, Ali bin Al-Hassan bin Youssef Al-Damrawi, and Omar bin Issa Al-Soussi Al-Nahwi practiced teaching and studied under him in Alexandria. Among those are some of whom some of his poetry was narrated are: Abu al-Hasan al-Jayzi, and Abu al-Raja’ Bashir ibn al-Mubasher ibn Fatak al-Masri.[1]
He contacted Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Ali al-Yazuri, who was approached by al-Mustansir Billah al-Fatimi from Muharram in the year 442/June 1050 to Muharram 450/March 1058. Balnoubi kept on moving between Alexandria and Cairo where he earned the praise of princes and elders, and with some teaching.[2]
The year of his death, like his birth, is not clear. Perhaps he was alive until the last third of the fifth century AH.[1]
Literature[edit]
He was a Maghreb poet who often imitated Al-Mashareq in his purposes and style, and Omar Farroukh said of him, “With some eloquence and beauty of style, despite the weakness of his style at times. He did not mention Sicily in his poetry. Rather, he had many characteristics of Egyptian poets in the Fatimid era, which indicates that most of his poetry was said in Egypt, and perhaps a large part of his life was also in Egypt". The arts of his poetry praise, satire, lamentation, description and spinning. In his poetry, he mentions some of his praisers, such as Ibn Hamdan, al-Yazuri, Bani al-Mawaqqi, and Ibn al-Madbir.
Al-Imad Al-Isfahani mentioned that he has a collection of poetry, in which he said: “I read in a total of free-form poetry, more than ruby and pearl, attributed to Abu Al-Hassan bin Abi Al-Bishr, and it includes meanings of gharar.” His Diwan was edited by Hilal Naji and published in 1976.[1] [3]He had good connections with the poets of his time, including his connection with Abu Sulayman bin Hebat Allah the writer.[1]
