Acceptance Sydney is a Catholic LGBT organization based out of Sydney, Australia.[1][2][3][4][5][excessive citations] Acceptance is now the second oldest Catholic LGBT organization in the world.[6]
History[edit]
Acceptance was established in 1972 by Garry Pye as a group of LGBT Catholics meeting to have Mass.[6][7] Pye and others wanted a way to keep practicing their faith and embrace their sexual orientations.[5][6]
The group was first invited to have formal Mass in a church in 1990 at St. Canice Church in Elizabeth Bay.[6]
In 2006 the group moved to St. Joseph's parish and continued having Mass there.[6]
Events and services[edit]
Religious services[edit]
Acceptance Sydney hosts an LGBT friendly mass weekly at St. Joseph's, Newtown.[2][6]
Mardi Gras[edit]
Acceptance Sydney has participated in Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras annually since its creation.[7]
Controversy[edit]
In 2010 Acceptance Sydney and St. Joseph's Church where the group attends Mass was protested by more conservative Catholics, who said the group was "sacrilegious."[8]
