Accredited Gemologists Association
Accredited Gemologists Association (AGA) is an American nonprofit professional association for gemologists and people involved in the study of gemstones. The association was established in 1974 and supports gemological education, research, professional networking and continuing education in the gem and jewelry fields.
History
The Accredited Gemologists Association was established in 1974 by a group of Fellows of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain. It was initially conceived as a network for sharing gemological information and skills. According to JA World, the organization was inspired by Antonio C. Bonanno and founded by Tamiko Butler and Sonja Schwartzman as the American Alumni of the FGA. By 1975, it had expanded to include Graduate Gemologists of the Gemological Institute of America.
The association later developed as a professional peer society for gemologists and other individuals with an interest in gemology. AGA describes its activities as focused on education, research, ethical standards and professional development in the gemological field.
