Achille Demagbo
Achille Demagbo (born 1980) is a Beninese-German politician and interpreter. He is a member of Alternative for Germany and served as chairman of the Kiel branch of the party.
Biography[edit]
Demagbo was born in Benin, West Africa in 1980 to parents who worked as teachers. He moved to Germany to study linguistics in 2003. He has stated that growing up he developed an admiration for the German philosophers Immanuel Kant and Friedrich Nietzsche. Demagbo subsequently became a German citizen in 2015 and worked as an interpreter.[1][2]
Political career[edit]
Demagbo has described himself as a conservative and a former supporter of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). He first became involved in Alternative for Germany in 2013 and became chairman of the AfD's Kiel branch. He later served as a member of the state board for the party in Schleswig-Holstein focusing on matters of immigration and integration before resigning in 2017. Demagbo currently works for the AfD parliamentary group in the Bundestag.[3][4][2][5]
Demagbo has garnered media attention for being a high ranking black member of the AfD.[6] He has stated that Germany needs a Canadian style points based system of immigration based purely on local needs, that migrants must learn to speak German and has criticised what he views as an "increasing distance between politicians and citizens." However, he has also called for more aid to be given to war refugees.[2] Demagbo is also critical of multiculturalism in Germany, arguing that poor integration "is why we have forced marriages and child marriages, people who adhere to sharia law, who are not committed to our democratic values" and "what we have in Germany are sacrificed on the political altar in favor of left-wing political experiments. I'm against it. The EU fails, the euro fails, and multiculturalism has also failed.”[5]
