Adam Johnston is a Canadian YouTuber, film critic and musician. He gained prominence through his YouTube channel YourMovieSucksDOTorg, where he reviews new movies with a dry and sardonic sense of humor. He also makes music through his pseudonym an Unkindness. Most notably, in 2017, his song "Fragments" was covered by American rock band Blondie.

YouTube career[edit]

Adam created his flagship YouTube channel, YourMovieSucksDOTorg (named after the book by Roger Ebert) on June 1, 2010. He uploaded his first video, a critique on the film Precious on June 3, 2010. He consistently uploaded "quickie" reviews of new releases and more analytical critiques of movies that were well-liked by the general public. He is known to be fairly harsh on movies, giving many beloved films the score of 6/10, leading to that being his catchphrase.

In 2014 YourMovieSucksDOTorg hit 100,000 subscribers, and began a gaming channel called AdumPlaze.

In 2018 he began co-hosting Sardonicast, a podcast with fellow YouTube film critics I Hate Everything and ralphthemoviemaker. The podcast features guest appearances by many other notable critics, such as Chris Stuckmann and Anthony Fantano.

In 2019, YourMovieSucksDOTorg hit one million subscribers.

Music[edit]

Since he was 17 in 2008, Johnston has made music under the pseudonym an Unkindness, named after the collective noun of ravens, which are often seen on his promotional material.

He began uploading demos of the songs he wrote onto YouTube in 2008. Once he gained notability for his movie reviews, he would often play brief clips of his songs at the end of YourMovieSucks videos.[1]

He released his first official EP, 4 Songs, in 2010. All four of the songs from the EP were released as DLC for Rock Band 3 on the Rock Band Network.[2][3]

In 2013, Johnston released The Present, an EP consisting of two new demos.

On May 5, 2017, American rock band Blondie announced that they would be covering Johnston's 2010 song "Fragments" for their album Pollinator. The song garnered positive reviews and was named Blondie's 19th greatest song by The Guardian.[4]

On September 6, 2016, Johnston announced through a short trailer that he was working on his very first studio album, set to release in 2017.[5] Due to the difficulties of an unsigned artist trying to release an album by himself, the album was delayed indefinitely[6][7], until September 15, 2020, when he announced that the album was finished and would finally released.[8]

On September 28, Johnston's first studio album 10 Years was released and met with much excitement from fans. The album featured some songs heard on his YouTube channel as early as 2008, and some never-before-heard songs.
