Adetola Rilwan Nola (born 18 November 1990) is a Nigerian business executive, entrepreneur, financial advisor and chemical engineer.[1] In 2019, Adetola Nola made the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for Africa in the business category.[2]

Background and education[edit]

Nola was born in Molete, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.[3] He earned his first degree in Chemical Engineering from the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, Osun State.[4] He served as a Vice President of AIESEC while in the university.[5] He has a certification in Managerial finance from the London Business School, and furthered his education by acquiring a Master of Business Administration from the London Metropolitan University.[6] He is a Chartered Financial Analyst.[7]

Career[edit]

Early career[edit]

Nola started his career as an intern at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (now called NNPC Limited), which is Nigeria's state-owned oil and gas company, handling the exploration, production, and distribution of petroleum products. He was named NNPC’s “Best Intern (Operations)”.[8] Following his one-year stint at NNPC Ibadan, in 2013, he relocated to Lagos and launched a fashion venture alongside a friend. They began by purchasing and rebranding shoes for resale, which later translated to include establishing their own shoe manufacturing plant in Lagos.[7]

Over the years, he founded a total of five other companies. These include Noah & Nola Incorporated - leather company[9], Nola Travels - a travel agency, Couture 89, Pineapples Luxury Retail Store and Eystone Limited.[10] None of the companies were successful.[9]

He entered the real estate profession in 2015 after being convinced by his client-cum-mentor.[7] He started his real estate career working as a marketer; a career in which he also suffered a slow start to.[11]

Veritasi homes and Properties[edit]

In April 2017, he founded his real estate firm, “Veritasi Homes and Properties”.[12][13] In an interview with Business Day, he expressed that starting his own real estate firm was the “biggest risk of his life”. He iterated,

Prior to starting the company, I had two cars and a shoe factory. I sold the cars, all the machines, the generators, and all the shoes I had imported. I also borrowed money from a friend of mine called Ife. If the business had failed, I would probably have committed suicide (laughs), but then, I wouldn’t have…[7]

The company realized over 2 billion naira (4.4 million USD) in profit from sales in its first five years and is the first Nigerian local real estate development company to attain a global investment rating.[14][15] The rating was issued by Scope – the European rating agency.[16] It handles the 6.5 billion naira (14.2 million USD) project in Banana Island and have generally sold over 1,500 plots of land.[4][6] In the 2nd quarter of 2022, it signed a 10 billion naira (22.8 million USD) commercial paper,[17][18] and has successfully repaid the Series 1 and 2 of its commercial paper to the tune of 5.5 billion naira (US$12 million) by the fourth quarter.[19] Veritasi has several real estate projects in Lagos and Abuja.[20] The firm holds the annual “Veritasi Realtors Conference” in partnership with the Lagos Business School.[21][22]

Other careers[edit]

He is a life coach and financial advisor. He convenes the annual “Learn With Nola” event, which is a free programme where he aims at educating upcoming entrepreneurs about the rudiments of business registration; networking and negotiation; and financial intelligence.[23] The programme though free,[24] and has been held annually for three consecutive years.[25][26][27]
