Adira's Dream is a 2019 British film written and directed by Oliver Williams. It is a magical realism/paranoid fiction genre film set in contemporary London, over a Tinder (app) style date.

Plot[edit]

Adira is writing a story about her life. She uses a mysterious typewriter to edit and rose-tint aspects of her life to make them 'better', in much the same way some people use Social Media platforms to make their lives appear better to outsiders.[1]. Trouble happens when she chooses to do this to someone else.

Cast[edit]

  • Angelique Jones as Adira
  • Thomas Moore as Dan
  • Phoebe Williams as Waitress 1
  • Rebecca Ingram as Waitress 2

Production[edit]

As Oliver Williams's debut feature, it was designed to be as inexpensive as possible to make. It was shot on mobile phones using anamorphic lens adapters. Additional photography was shot on location in Iceland using a consumer drone. The film was shot mostly on two film sets that Williams built singlehandedly in his parent's barn in rural Oxfordshire[2]. This was considered to be substantially cheaper than the equivalent location hire. Exterior scenes were shot on location in London. Along with writing, directing, and photographing the film, Williams also raised the finances to produce the film under Oblidah, his production company[3]

In March 2018 Williams asked Angelique Jones, a friend from University, to help him with a script he had been writing about his experiences of dating in the social media world[4]. It soon became clear that Jones was the ideal person to cast as the title role. The character of Dan was more challenging but Thomas Moore, also Williams's friend from University and Jones' partner, stepped forward to play the role. Neither Jones nor Moore had ever acted before but Williams considered their relationship and their closeness to the project to be advantageous to the story.

At the same time Williams approached Kat Kemsley to help produce the film. Kat and Williams also met at University, as did her partner Nathaniel Reading, a musician and band member of AK Patterson with Alexandra Patterson and Alfie Weedon. AK Patterson provided the sound score for the finished film.[5]

He asked Phoebe Williams and Lucy de Roeper, two contemporary artists to produce original artwork to decorate the both the sets.[4]

Production lasted for 4 weeks during August 2018, including a final week of additional photography in Iceland.[4]

To build sets was a choice Williams made once initial finances were secured. He used his extensive experience in set design for major studio pictures, to create a bedroom set and restaurant set on an extremely limited budget.

Post Production lasted for 6 months extending into early 2019. Patrick Miles Widdop was the editor and Louise Burton was the sound Designer.[6]
