Afetsi Besa Awoonor (born August 31, 1982) is a Ghanaian entrepreneur and writer specialized in petroleum trading and security technology.[2] Awoonor is a surviving victim of the September 2013 attack at Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya where he was participant at the Storymoja Hay Festival with his Father Prof. Kofi Awoonor.[3]
Early life and education[edit]
Afetsi B. Awoonor, the fourth son and fifth child of the late Professor Kofi Awoonor was born in Accra, Ghana. His childhood was spent in Ghana, Brazil, Cuba and the United States of America.[4][5]
Afetsi Awoonor then proceeded to studying Marketing at the Central University College in Accra whilst pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He went on to pursue a dual Executive Master of advanced studies (MAS) in international Oil and Gas leadership at the Graduate Institute of International and Development studies in Geneva Switzerland and the IFP school in Rueil-Malmaison, France. He is currently pursuing a PhD in view in Business Administration from the Geneva Business School, Switzerland.
Westgate Attack[edit]
During an interview with BBC's journalist, Komla Dumor, Afetsi describes the events that led to the death of his father, the late Prof. Kofi Awoonor, as well as his near-death experience during a terrorist attack in Nairobi, Kenya.[6][7][8]
The terrorist attack on the Westgate shopping mall claimed the lives of many. According to him, they had gone to the mall on that day for lunch when the attack which lasted days begun. He recalled that the moment they alighted from the vehicle, they heard gunshots with people running helter-skelter for safety.[9][3]
“…I found somewhere to hide and tried to look back to see if I could see any sign of my father but I didn’t,”
Fearing for his life, he said, he decided to "run for cover" and in the process lost communication and contact with the father during the chaos. In the process of running from the scene, seeking for cover, he was shot in the back but managed to make it to a hideout. After making it to the hideout, he looked around for signs of his father but couldn't find him.[3]

His father's remains were flown to Ghana from Nairobi to Ghana on 25th September 2013. His body was cremated and buried in his hometown at Wheta in the Volta region of Ghana.[10]
