African Leadership Network (ALN) is a community of business leaders in Africa; it is a member based organization founded by Fred Swaniker and Acha Leke in 2010. Its core purpose is to foster growth in Africa by bringing together business leaders to increase prosperity on the continent.

Inspired by the leadership principles of Nelson Mandela, ALN hosts an annual 3-day gathering event each year in a different African country.

History[edit]

The African Leadership Network was founded by Fred Swaniker and Acha Leke.[1]

As an invitation-only member-based organization, African Leadership Network currently has 1,200 members: senior government leaders, captains of industry, leading investors, CEOs, entrepreneurs, editors, media owners, academics and opinion shapers representing different sectors of government, the economy and society across Africa.[2]

African Leadership Network is intended to provide a platform for building relationships among African business leaders and mobilize the collective influence of its members to strengthen the entrepreneurship ecosystem.[2]

In 2011, the network acquired the rights to host the Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship (AAE) by Legatum. Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship honors entrepreneurs in Africa every year.[3] Winners are selected by the AAE vetting team. The Omidyar Network, a philanthropic investment firm, is the anchor sponsor of AAE.[4]

Organization Structure[edit]

African Leadership Network’s leadership comprises the Global Advisory Board (GAB),[5] the Board of Trustees (BOT),Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Membership and the Director of Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship.

The Chief Executive Officer of the organization is Mr. Isaac Kwaku Fokuo Jr.[6]

Membership[edit]

The network comprises 1200 members in up to 45 countries on the continent.[7]

Events[edit]

The African Leadership Network’s Annual Gathering is a 3-day leadership retreat, which brings together about 250-300 ALN members in an African city. The gatherings bring together high-level decision makers including captains of industries, CEOs of leading multinationals in Africa, senior government officials, select groups of high-calibre entrepreneurs and other stakeholders. The winners of the Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship are also feted during the annual gatherings.[8]

Since inception, the network has hosted 4 annual gatherings in Ethiopia, Ghana and Mauritius. The first two gatherings were held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2010 and 2011; the 2012 gathering was held in Ghana while the 2013 gathering took place in Mauritius.[9]

Relationship Concierge[edit]

The African Leadership Network ‘Relationship Concierge’ service provides ’relationship brokering’ services to enable its members to engage with stakeholders.

Africa Awards For Entrepreneurship[edit]

The Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship ("AAE") was established in 2007 by Legatum to recognize businesses that are driving prosperity in Africa as well as entrepreneurs and business leaders who demonstrate innovation, profitability and business excellence. Since its inception, Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship has received above 7,000 applications from African businesses and awarded prizes worth over USD 1.6 million to 30 leading companies.[10]

The African Leadership Network acquired the rights to organize and host the Awards from Legatum in 2011.[11]
