Her Climb is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York City. The organization provides a free, multi-year leadership and college access program for public high school girls from underserved communities across the city. The program is rooted in four pillars: leadership, access, wellness, and sisterhood, and delivered across four career tracks: business, creative arts, journalism, and STEM.
History
Her Climb was founded by Rita Omokha, an adjunct assistant professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and a contributing journalist for publications including Vanity Fair, The Washington Post, ELLE, and The Guardian.[1] Omokha founded Her Climb to expand leadership development opportunities for public high school girls from under-resourced communities in New York City, with the goal of increasing the representation of women in business, creative arts, journalism, and STEM.[2]
The organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and launched its inaugural cohort of 16 scholars in 2026.[3] Students are selected from public high schools across New York City's five boroughs through a competitive application and interview process. The program begins with a three-week Summer Intensive hosted at Columbia University's Pulitzer Hall, followed by programming throughout the academic year. Her Climb recruits students during their freshman year of high school and provides programming and mentorship through college graduation and into early career.
