Aidel Paul Garcia Belamide (born April 10, 1987) is a Filipino farmer and politician. He currently serves as vice mayor of Silang, Cavite after having won his election in May 2016.[1]

Early life[edit]

He was born on April 10, 1987 in Manila to Apolonio Belamide (1953–2015), a second-generation farmer of Silang, Cavite, and Rosario Garcia (1947–present). [2] He has two siblings, Rose and Eric. He also has a second cousin Ferdinand Belamide who served on Silang’s municipal council between 2006-2010.

Education[edit]

Aidel holds a bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts from the University of the Philippines Los Baños and a master’s degree in Anthropology from the Ateneo de Manila University. Additionally, he received exchange student grants from the Michigan State University in the United States of America and Universiti Malaysia Sabah in Malaysia; fellowship grants from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, University of the Philippines Diliman, and University of Santo Tomas; and honorary memberships from the International Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and International Honor Society of Pi Gamma Mu. He was also recognized as the first Summa cum laude graduate of the BA Communication Arts program in UPLB, one of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines in 2009, one of the Jose Rizal Model Students of the Philippines in 2007, and as the Gawad Emilio Aguinaldo awardee of 2009.[3]

Political career[edit]

Aidel first entered public service at 17 when he was elected the Sangguniang Kabataan Municipal Federation President and Provincial Federation Vice-President in 2002 and Secretary-General of the Kabataang Pangarap ni Rizal National Council in 2004. He then proceeded to run and get elected as Municipal Councilor in 2013, and Vice Mayor in 2016.[4] As Vice Mayor, he has been known to Facebook Livestream entire municipal sessions as a means to encourage transparency and good governance.[5]
