Air Canada Flight 837 (AC837) was a scheduled passenger flight from Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport to Toronto Pearson International Airport that suffered a tire failure on takeoff from runway 36L at Madrid Airport at 14:57 CET (13:57 GMT) on 3 February 2020. The aircraft was Boeing 767-300ER, registration C-GHOZ. Out of the 138 occupants, all on board survived without injury. A Spanish Air Force (SAF) McDonnell Douglas EF-18M Hornet was scrambled to intercept and examine the damage sustained to the aircraft. It was Air Canada's 27th accident in the history of the company.[1]

Aircraft[edit]

The aircraft, a Boeing 767-300ER (registration C-GHOZ; construction number 24087), had been manufactured in early 1989 and had been introduced with Canadian Airlines (registration C-FCAU), Varig in 1997 (registration PP-VPW) and finally Air Canada in 2005.[2]

Flight[edit]

The Boeing 767 was cleared for takeoff on runway 36L at Madrid Airport at 14:56 (CET) by controllers. As the plane surpassed V1 speed, a violent vibration was felt and then a sudden jolt. This is because one of the tire treads from the left rear wheel of the left main gear detached and fragments were ingested by engine 1. Then, it was noticed that the one of the aircraft's General Electric CF6-80C2B6F engines was spewing fire and stuttering due to fragments of tire number 5. The pilots noticed that the Boeing was too fast to abort and had already consumed a large amount of runway, meaning they had no choice but to rotate.

The pilots then levelled the aircraft off at 5,000 ft (ASL) and shut engine 1 down for a precaution. Later, the aircraft was cleared to hold at 8,000 feet (ASL) to burn off fuel to prevent a heavy landing. The controller then cleared the aircraft for landing once they had consumed enough fuel. A Spanish F-18 was instructed to intercept Flight 837 and inspect damage it had suffered. The fighter aircraft confirmed that one of the landing gears was damaged due to a blown tire.

After 4 hours and 10 minutes of being airborne, the Air Canada aircraft landed back at Madrid, on runway 32L with no further incident. All 138 passengers and crew disembarked the aircraft unharmed.[3]

Investigation[edit]

On February 5, Spain's CIAIAC launched an investigation into the accident. Also Canada's TSB (Transportation Safety Board of Canada) reported that:

  • " During takeoff, rubber from the number 5 main landing gear tire detached . Some debris was found on the runway and others were ingested by the left engine. As a precaution, the flight crew performed an in-flight shut down of the left engine. After burning off fuel to avoid an overweight landing, the aircraft returned to LEMD (Madrid-Barajas) for an uneventful landing. There were no injuries to the occupants. Preliminary inspection of the aircraft shows damage to the left engine and left main landing gear." [4]
