airmates is a software-based platform for On Board Courier transports.[1] On Board Couriers, also called OBCs or airmates, personally accompany especially urgent and sensitive shipments worldwide, providing a door-to-door transport service.[2] Manual, time-consuming searching for suitable flight connections and couriers is no longer needed thanks to the complete digitization of quote, booking and tracking processes.[3] In parallel to the automated flight searches, suitable pre-vetted couriers are located and requested for assignments via the specially developed airmates app.[4] Besides courier selection, the app also provides continuous tracking.[5]

Logistics service provider time:matters GmbH was founded on 1. January 2002 and has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Lufthansa Cargo AG since August 2016.[6] The company has been offering On Board Courier transports for many years. Development of its software-based airmates platform began in late 2015, with the launch following in 2017.[7] Users can input their shipment details on the platform and receive a complete quote in less than a minute, which can then be used to make an immediate booking.[8] airmates currently has a global network of 10,000 couriers in more than 50 countries.[9]
On Board Courier (airmates)[edit]
The On Board Courier service facilitates permanent, personal monitoring of urgent shipments and the fastest possible delivery. Couriers usually pick up consignments directly from clients and personally accompany them on board the next available flight to their destination.[10] Customers who avail themselves of this transport option benefit from maximum speed and reliability, making this a popular choice when emergency logistics are required. In spare parts logistics in particular, significant monetary losses can quickly mount up during downtime while waiting on machine parts in, for example, the automotive industry, other manufacturing industries or aircraft on ground situations.[11] Medical samples, important documents and haute couture are also transported by airmates.[12] The On Board Courier’s main remit is to personally collect a consignment, accompany the transport, take care of customs clearance and deliver the shipment to where it is needed.[13] Size and weight permitting, the consignment travels with the courier as hand luggage. Otherwise, it is checked in as highest-priority luggage.[14] This avoids waiting times and ensures the fastest possible delivery.[15]
