Al & Ed's Autosound is a chain of mobile electronics retailers located in Los Angeles and San Diego

History[edit]

The company was founded by Aaron "Al" Brostky and Ed Zionts in 1954 in Los Angeles, California with their first store being located at 54th and Figueroa.[1] In 1985, Al & Ed's started franchising stores[1]

General Mobile was an offshoot business of Al & Eds that worked directly with automobile dealers to install radios and sound equipment in new cars. Later they also sold music tape cartridges direct to car dealers[2]. In January 1970 a prerecorded 8 track cost $4.98 and a cassette cost $5.98. 75% of their sales were in 8 track and 20% in 4 track[3]. However, Al & Eds was sued by A&M Records, ABC-Dunhill, Atlantic, Columbia & Warner Bros in 1971 over tape piracy. Damages of $100,000 were sought. [4]

Al Brotsky volunteered at and hired from the East Los Angeles Skills Center[5]

All 25 of its stores were remodeled in 2006[6]

In 2001, Aaron Brotsky retired and handed leadership to Gabi Mashal, a 15-year veteran and owner of three franchised stores, who took over as president.[7]

In 2015, HRAP Inc. and CV & DA Holdings Inc. Joint Venture acquired Al & Edʼs and its 14 stores[8]

In its early years, Al and Ed's was a pioneer in Los Angeles for being amongst the first to install in cars: FM radios, rear speakers, and later cassette decks and car alarms. [9] In the 1980s, Al & Eds began selling car-phones and then later other mobile electronics like pagers, cellular phones and GPS
