Alberto (Al) G. Santos is the Mayor of Kearny, New Jersey. Santos formerly served as councilman of Kearny's Second Ward for one year. Santos was elected Mayor in 1999 and then re-elected in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2013.
Background[edit]
Al was born in Caracas, Venezuela to Portuguese immigrants from Murtosa, Portugal.[1] In 1979, Al and his family moved to Kearny.
2009 Mayoral Run[edit]
Santos was up for reelection in 2009. He had no Democratic opponents during the primary elections. During the general election, his only opponent was Republican, John Leadbeater, a former Councilman who had served 10 years on the Council. Santos won 58% to 42% against Leadbeater.[3]
Santos also serves as the Clerk to the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders.[4]
